About Incalf
InCalf is a national learning program funded by dairy farmers through Dairy Australia. Now launching into its third phase, InCalf is working with dairy farmers and advisers to achieve measured improvement in herd reproductive performance.
InCalf Phase 1. (1996-1998) saw InCalf undertake a ground-breaking on-farm research study on a massive scale (involving nearly 40,000 cows from over 200 commercial herds around Australia, including 119 Victorian herds). This produced a superb database that has provided detailed information on the management practices that drive good fertility in Australian dairy herds.
The results of the study showed that dairy farmers have control over many of the factors that affect fertility. This was the stimulus to take the study results out of dairy regions as they became available. In 2000-2001, the key study findings were communicated to 2000 farmers and more than 400 advisers through a series of seminars and publications (InCalf Phase 2.).
Through this information awareness phase, farmers indicated that they needed support to bring about real improvement in their herds. So in 2002, InCalf Phase 3. commenced with further funding through Dairy Australia. Behind-the-scenes development produced an innovative package of resources and tools, and training programs – the new InCalf learning package.
This package will help farmers and their advisers pursue continuous improvements in herd reproductive performance, following the InCalf step-by step process.
